About me

It's a great honour to have been given the opportunity to represent Fine Gael in the upcoming local elections. I have always followed the political scene with my father introducing me to Fine Gael at a young age.

I am a straight spoken man that believes, one word can be stronger than two. I have reached a stage in my life that I have the experience to make a difference and the energy and drive to tackle the issues that may arise in our locality.

I was born and raised in Lisgrey, Virginia. My Father (Peter RIP) and Mother (Mary) ran the local shop, Post Office and pub, now known as Lisgrey house. My brother Philip runs Lisgrey House and my 4 sisters Rosemary, Helen, Anita and Sinead are all working locally, with the last being the Vice Principal of Maghera National School.

I attended national and secondary school in Virginia before taking a degree in Ballyhaise Agriculture College to study Agriculture Science.

Currently residing on my suckler and sheep farm in Ardlow, Crossreagh, Virginia, (Cross) Which happens to be just down the road from my mother's birthplace.

I have worked in the construction industry for most of my life. First as a self-employed tradesman and currently as a team leader with CivilX. Working on large scale projects throughout Ireland e.g. Luas Extension line and Dublin Airport Overlay Project.

I have been involved in many clubs and events over the years. A member of the IFA and supporter of Cavan GAA. One of my greatest achievements to date was helping to build a school for the blind in Kenya as part of the "Building of Hope Project". This was truly a life-changing experience which has left me eager to strive to make a greater difference here on home soil and especially in my locality.

If elected I will strive to represent both young and old in all issues and to increase positivity in our local area. By not only highlighting the issues but by also promoting and drawing attention to what we have on our doorstep. To promote local businesses, local facilities and increase tourism to this beautiful part of Ireland.

Business

  • There is a growing issue of empty retail space appearing in our towns and villages. I hope to address this issue by introducing a special rates scheme to entice businesses to repurpose retail space and to give businesses a chance to get established before having to pay rates.
  • Rural broadband is an issue, but there are solutions available at a local level. Through the advances of technology, it is possible to set up large WiFi networks to send high-speed broadband to homes outside the largely populated areas.
  • To develop a campaign to promote our area as an attractive location to set up/relocate businesses too. We have great advantages with easy access to Dublin Via the M3 and the relatively low cost of commercial land, and the current unused Cavan County Council Land to attract business to our area.

Youth

  • To create a greater awareness of the facilities and groups/clubs in the area.
  • Encourage the 18 to 30-year-old age group to get out and vote. That in the coming years there will be life-changing events and issues, having a local politician in their corner that will represent their views will be of great importance in the future.

Farming

  • With the uncertainty of Brexit in the upcoming months, it is more important than ever to have a representative from a farming background. Running my own suckler and sheep farm I am aware of the difficulty in the industry.
  • There is a great opportunity to capitalise on the agritourism sector, by increasing the awareness of grants for converting old buildings.
